Volunteer with Us!
Interested in volunteering with us? Please describe your previous bird banding and/or field experience (if any) using the form below.
If you have very limited banding experience or none at all, please don’t be intimidated! One of our goals as a research station is to continue to train people of all experience levels and bridge gaps between communities and scientific research. As a very public, high-volume bird capture station, we do hope to recruit volunteers with at least some banding experience, but each season we will prioritize several people with no banding experience to ensure we’re providing equitable access in our communities to research efforts like ours, regardless of prior experience.
Above all, we’re looking to work with people who can demonstrate focus, a positive attitude, teamwork, the ability to follow protocols and instructions, a desire to learn and accept constructive feedback, and showcase humility throughout the training process (reference the Bander’s Code of Ethics).
Some general things to consider for volunteering (please consider your capacity for the following and if you may require accommodations):
- We operate very early in the morning, which will require driving before sunrise
- The commute can be long and the mountain roads are winding
- The net lane access trails can be difficult hiking in some areas
- In addition to training in the field, we require some reading/studying prior to the start of the season
- We typically ask for a volunteer commitment of at least once a week for about 8 weeks
- We are a high-volume bird banding station—both in birds and people. Please consider your level of comfortability with this type of non-traditional banding station environment
Once the below form is filled out and submitted, your information will be added to our list of interested volunteers and we will be in touch about potential opportunities for the upcoming spring season. Please email bandbeardivide@gmail.com if you have any other questions!
